Advanced press photography and picture editor training began at the University of Kaposvár in 2004. Several of the graduates go on to study for an MA degree at other universities in Hungary or abroad. The Contemporary Photography Collection of the National Széchényi Library now turns to this generation of young photographers for the first time, launching a series of exhibitions that feature those students who take up, as it were, the centuries-old tradition of Hungarians studying at foreign universities.
The first exhibit of this series presents Orsolya Elek, who studied for an MA at the Université Paris 8, and Gergely Timár, who earned his postgraduate diploma at the Kunstuniversität of Linz. Some of the works on view look back on their time in Kaposvár, while the rest give a taste of their recent projects and indicate the current directions of their work. Man is the main interest of both, while their respective approaches and modes of interpretation are completely dissimilar. These character studies bear testimony to the two artists’ original outlook and artistic thinking, while they also benefit from the possibilities of contemporary photographic technology.
