Zsolt Birtalan’s exhibition directly reflects, with its timing as well, on the curious and special state of being an artist during the coronavirus pandemic—that strange blend of creative opportunities, personal situation, and thematic reflection. The journal, whose popularity grew with the pandemic, the isolation and social distancing, here takes the form of visual entries by a photographer always ready to create something. The 40 pictures that are first put on view at Artphoto Gallery provide a special corpus for an individual and artistic approach to a situation that, it is safe to say, challenges the whole of humanity.
“During our days in quarantine, our experience of ourselves, the outside world, and our relationship to others, can deepen. Being locked up with others, along with the monotony, may produce a meditative state. Our senses become keener, everything may come into a different light. I kept a journal, in this case a visual diary, for 40 days, with one entry a day.” (Zsolt Birtalan)
